The United States is preparing to tell dozens of countries that they must choose sides in the AI ​​race with China, warning they will be excluded from the US-led AI coalition if they join Beijing's rival alliance, according to an internal draft reviewed by Reuters.

Washington last year launched the Pax Silica initiative, which aims to secure supply chains for artificial intelligence models, semiconductors and critical minerals amid fierce technology competition with Beijing.

About two dozen countries, including Kazakhstan, have joined this union. In addition to being an important potential source of critical minerals joining China's coalition, Kazakhstan also includes close allies of the United States such as Japan, Australia and South Korea.

The draft letter prepared by the State Department was addressed to the 35 signatories of the United States' "AI Opportunity Statement," which was signed in June and includes members of the non-binding Pax Silica initiative and other countries that have expressed a desire to align cooperation with Washington on artificial intelligence.

By forcing countries to choose sides, the United States hopes to deprive China of resources in the race to produce the most advanced artificial intelligence that can be used for military or economic superiority.

The Pax Silica agreement aims to push U.S. allies and partners toward joint projects and export controls, ultimately reducing dependence on rivals for critical minerals, artificial intelligence models and the semiconductor chips that power them.

The race for technological leadership between the US and China has reached a critical point, with China's open-source AI models advancing rapidly against proprietary systems from US companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

The exponential growth of technology's capabilities, including the ability to hack autonomously, has forced a global reckoning on its power.

Beijing is considering restricting overseas access to some of China's leading artificial intelligence models, underscoring growing tensions with its hard-line national security agenda.
