Why may I be asked to stay for 3 to 6 more months even though my passport has not expired?
David Alwadish explained that such regulations are mainly to ensure that passengers hold valid travel documents during their scheduled stay, while leaving a buffer time to deal with travel delays, temporary extensions of stay or emergencies.
For example, a passenger originally only planned to stay in the south of France for two weeks, but decided to extend the trip at short notice when he arrived there; or he suddenly fell ill or had an accident during the trip, making it impossible to fly back home as originally planned.
Katy Nastro pointed out that if a traveler has to stay there for a longer period of time due to serious illness or accident, and his or her passport expires during this period, he or she may face a series of problems when leaving the country.
Therefore, the additional validity period of the passport is like a "safety buffer", allowing travelers to maintain valid travel documents even if their itinerary changes.
However, not all countries have additional validity requirements of 3 to 6 months. For example, Mexico only requires travelers to keep their passports valid for the entire trip and does not require them to be retained for an additional few months after the trip ends.
Experts remind that before traveling abroad, travelers should not just look at the expiration date on their passport, but should first confirm the specific regulations of the destination country.
Katy Nastro recommends that you start considering renewing your passport one year before it expires to avoid discovering that the validity period is insufficient close to the date of departure.
Alwadish suggested that travelers can check the website of the embassy or consulate of the destination country in their country to confirm the latest entry regulations, and they can also refer to the relevant government travel information.
After confirming the regulations, compare the passport expiration date with the actual return date.
In particular, please note that some countries calculate passport validity based on the "date of return" rather than the date of departure. For example, if it is required that the validity period is still 6 months after returning to the country, it must be calculated from the expected date of departure or return to the country, not from the day of departure.
In addition, if your passport is only valid for 4 or 5 months after returning to your country, it is also recommended to confirm the airline's boarding regulations in advance to avoid finding out that you cannot board the plane when you arrive at the airport.
