Alexander Blessin is the new coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach

Alexander Blessin will be the new coach of Bundesliga bottom club Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 53-year-old has a contract in the Lower Rhine until 2028, as the club confirmed. Blessin last coached FC St. Pauli for two years and was released after their relegation in 2026. The Stuttgart native will be introduced on Wednesday.

Blessin succeeds Eugen Polanski, who had to leave after just three match days. Borussia haven't picked up a point after four matchdays and have conceded 16 goals - the worst start to the season in the club's history. Blessin will make his competitive debut with his new employer after the long international break on October 11th in the Rhenish derby against 1. FC Köln.

Sports director Rouven Schröder had already reported a “verbal agreement” with a coach after the 3:4 (1:2) win against Mainz 05 on Saturday, but did not reveal the name.

Blessin began his coaching career in RB Leipzig's youth ranks in 2012 and became head coach for the first time at Belgian first division club KV Ostende in 2020. His path back to Belgium led him to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise via FC Genoa and to St. Pauli in the summer of 2024. As Fabian Hürzeler's successor, he initially led the newly promoted team to 14th place, but after relegation a year later they separated.
