F-16 Warplane Crashed Near Spangdahlem Base, Germany, Pilot Survived Injured

An F16 fighter jet crashed near Spangdahlem US Air Base in Germany. The pilot survived the accident injured.

An F16 fighter jet crashed near Spangdahlem US Air Base in the Eifel region of Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state. Eyewitnesses stated that the warplane descended rapidly and smoke rose from the area after it crashed into the ground. Following the notice of eyewitnesses, many search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area. According to the first information obtained from the teams in the region, it was learned that the F16 pilot activated the ejection seat and was slightly injured in the accident.

German media reported that two fighter jets took off from a US military base this afternoon and one of them crashed. It was reported that the US Base Command will make a statement later.

F16 JETS STATIONED AT US MILITARY BASE

A fleet of F-16 fighter jets consisting of approximately 20 aircraft is stationed at the Spangdahlem US military base in western Germany. This fleet, which supports the worldwide operations of the US Air Force and NATO, is the most important element of the air base. According to the latest data, the base employs approximately 5 thousand military and civilian personnel and their families. Most recently, in October 2019, an F-16 type US warplane crashed into a forest around Zemmer-Rodt (Trier-Saarburg district), near the air base. The pilot escaped with minor injuries by using the ejection seat in the accident during a routine exercise flight.

The US Air Force has been based at Spangdahlem since the mid-1950s. Spangdahlem Air Base, along with Ramstein near the city of Kaiserslautern, is considered one of the most important air bases for the US army. Plans to withdraw from the base were on the agenda during US President Donald Trump's first term. However, the US government, which did not implement these plans, suspended the withdrawal decision in 2021.
