Amadeu Antonio Foundation warns of right-wing violence and calls for a protective shield for democracy

After the AfD's electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation warned of an impending escalation of right-wing violence and dangers for civil society organizations and social minorities. To counteract this, the foundation in Berlin called on the federal government to provide a “democracy protective shield”.

This is intended to enable long-term and reliable support for democratic civil society in all structurally weak regions in Germany, it said in a statement. The foundation also launched a petition for such a protective shield on its website, which is addressed to the Federal Government's Eastern Commissioner, Elisabeth Kaiser (SPD).

Chairman Timo Reinfrank urgently warned against an AfD taking over the government in Saxony-Anhalt. This would not be an ordinary change of government, but rather an AfD government could "escalate right-wing violence, prevent civil society work and make schools a site for right-wing extremist influence," the foundation said.
