Attack on Iranian cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz – at least one dead

At least one person has been killed in an attack on an Iranian cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The ship was “hit” early on Sunday morning off the islands of Hengam and Keshm, said the governor of the city of Keshm, Amir Tejmuri, according to state television and the Tasnim news agency. Three people were also injured.

According to the information, Tejmuri did not provide any information about the origin of the attack or the weapons used. Several explosions were reported around the island of Keschm during the night.

The British Maritime Safety Authority (UKMTO) had previously reported an attacked ship in the Strait of Hormuz. It was hit by an “unknown projectile” while crossing the strait, the authorities announced that night. There was no information about the whereabouts of the crew or possible damage, it said.

Unlike in most previous cases, the authority did not provide any information about the exact location of the incident. This left it unclear whether the ship was hit off the coast of Oman or closer to the Iranian coast. It also remained unclear who was responsible for the attack.

The Strait of Hormuz is at the heart of the conflict between the US and Iran. It is extremely important for global trade in oil and gas. Tehran has largely blocked the strait since the Iran War began at the end of February with US-Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic. In return, the USA imposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Ships must present a permit to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Iran also wants to charge fees for passage, which the USA and the countries in the region reject. Talks between Iran and other Gulf states on the Strait of Hormuz are planned in Oman on Monday.
