NEW DELHI: India’s medal winners at the Asian Games 2026 could return home with more than a place on the podium. Along with national recognition, athletes who win gold, silver or bronze are eligible for cash awards under a central government scheme. They may also qualify for sports-quota jobs and additional incentives announced by their respective state governments.
The central cash awards are laid out in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ “Special Awards to Medal Winners in International Sports Events and their Coaches” scheme. The scheme, first introduced in 1986, has been revised over time, with the stated aim of rewarding sporting achievement, encouraging higher performance and inspiring young people to take up sports. For an individual Asian Games medal, the listed central award is Rs 30 lakh for gold, Rs 20 lakh for silver and Rs 10 lakh for bronze. These are the base figures: the amount for a team medal depends on the size of the team and the scheme’s rules for calculating and distributing awards.
Under the central scheme, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medal awards are the same. Olympic medal awards are higher.
The same corresponding award amounts apply to Para Games medal winners. The cash incentive is subject to the eligibility criteria and conditions prescribed by the government. That means an Indian athlete who wins an individual gold in Aichi-Nagoya could be eligible for a central award of Rs 30 lakh. A silver medallist’s listed award is Rs 20 lakh, while a bronze medallist’s is Rs 10 lakh.
For team events, the scheme determines the award using the number of athletes in the team on the ground. The multiplier is applied to the corresponding individual-event award for the competition, medal and category. A team of two receives 1.5 times the corresponding award; a team of three or four receives twice the award; a team of five to 10 receives three times the award; and a team with more than 10 members receives five times the award. The resulting amount is shared equally among the team members, with a condition that no member receives less than 50% of the corresponding individual-event award. The scheme defines team events as competitions in which athletes compete collectively, and says incentives are awarded to all team members, including bench or reserve players, in accordance with the international standards applicable to each sport. It also provides that, in specified sports disciplines, each team member’s cash incentive is 75% of the incentive amount applicable to the corresponding individual event, based on the medal, level and participation category. These provisions mean that a team medal cannot simply be treated as the same flat award for every athlete. The final amount depends on the event’s classification, team strength and applicable scheme provisions.
The scheme also addresses athletes who win more than one medal at an international event. As a general rule, a sportsperson who wins multiple medals in individual or team categories is eligible for the cash incentive only for the highest-ranking medal won at that event. There is an important exception for the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games and Para-Asian Games: athletes who win multiple medals in individual or team categories may be eligible for the cash incentive for each medal, subject to the scheme’s terms and conditions. For an Asian Games athlete who wins more than one medal, therefore, the central award may be calculated medal by medal rather than being limited to the single highest finish. The precise amount still depends on whether the medals were won individually or as part of a team, and on the applicable team-event rules. Cash awards are only one part of the potential support available to medal winners. Athletes who have represented India in recognised international competitions, including the Asian Games, may also be considered for recruitment under sports-quota provisions. At the central level, recruitment of meritorious sportspersons is governed by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) instructions and related office memorandums. The central framework generally provides for appointment to Group C and erstwhile Group D posts, subject to eligibility, recruitment rules and the specific terms in force. It does not establish a general entitlement for every medal winner to receive a Group A or Group B post. A medal does not, by itself, mean that a job is automatically granted. Athletes must meet the relevant conditions, and appointments depend on the applicable recruitment process and rules. Serving government employees may also be covered by separate provisions, including certain out-of-turn promotion or incentive arrangements, where permitted.
The amount an athlete may receive after the Games can vary further because state governments frame their own sports policies and service rules. Some states offer additional cash awards, employment opportunities or other incentives to athletes from their state who win medals at major international competitions. As a result, two Indian athletes who win the same medal at the Asian Games may be eligible for different overall benefits depending on their state’s policy and their individual circumstances. State incentives are not uniform across India, and any announced reward or job offer must be checked against the specific state’s policy, eligibility conditions and formal government orders.
For athletes and families assessing what a medal could mean financially, the key distinction is between the central scheme’s published cash award and any separate state-level benefit. The central award schedule gives a clear starting point – Rs 30 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for individual Asian Games gold, silver and bronze – but the final package may depend on team-event calculations, multiple-medal provisions, state rules and eligibility for recruitment or other incentives.
