Australian runner Cameron Myers wins Diamond League 1500m in Brussels

Middle-distance runner Cameron Myers has become only the eighth Australian to win a Diamond League final crown with victory in the men’s 1500m in Brussels.

The 20-year-old claimed one of the biggest wins of his career to date as he beat a star-studded field that included Olympic champions Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cole Hocker to continue his own meteoric rise.

Myers timed a late burst down the home straight to perfection and dipped at the line to snatch victory in 3:30.14 ahead of Kenya’s Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech (3:30.18).

Ingebrigtsen, on the comeback trail after achilles surgery in February, dictated the pace of the race and looked on course for a morale-boosting win before ​tiring in the last 30 metres.

America’s Ethan Strand edged past the Norwegian in the final few steps to cross the line in 3:30.50 and round out the podium.

Myers won the 1500m in Brussels to continue a rich vein of form that includes smashing the national record when crossing first at the Paris Diamond League meet in June.

“I’m pretty relieved to be honest! It’s nice to get a win, I’m super pumped,” Myers said.​

“I was feeling good. I contemplated making a move on the back straight but I didn’t really need to, so I just waited as long as possible and a gap opened up and I was able to take it.

​“It’s pretty cool memorabilia to have a trophy like that.”

Pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall finished on the podium on Friday night after world record-holder and Olympic champion Armand Duplantis withdraw pre-competition.

​Marschall soared over 5.82m to finish in third place on countback behind Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen, while Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis claimed the event with a new meet record of 6.12m.

​“It’s another 5.80 and 5.80 doesn’t get enough credit,” Marschall said. “It’s still a hard bar to jump and if you do it when it counts, that’s what really matters.

​Lachlan Kennedy ran his fifth sub-10 second 100m of 2026 when flashing to fourth place in 9.99sec (+0.1), finishing just 0.02s off the podium.

​Racing from lane one, the Commonwealth champion returned to top form as the race was won by Jamaica’s reigning world champion Oblique Seville in 9.90s.

​“Under 10 seconds again in objectively not the best conditions,” Kennedy said. “The crowd was good, the field was good and it was a close race.

​“It’s high stakes and not good conditions, but they are the same for everyone else.”

​Discus thrower Matthew Denny was another Australian to finish one position shy of the podium as he ended his 2026 campaign with a 68.04m.

Denny’s throw was less than a metre short of the podium which was topped by Slovenia’s Kristjan Čeh with a meet record of 71.29m.

​Commonwealth champion Rose Davies also just missed the podium in the women’s 5000m, clocking 14:37.47 in the race won by Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu in 14:35.20.

Among her fellow Australians, Georgia Griffith was sixth in 14:38.69 and Linden Hall finished in 10th with a personal best time of 14:40.62.
