The expert warned about the risks of legalizing overbooking in Russia

Without clear rules and mandatory compensation for passengers, the legalization of overbooking will be a step backwards. The general director of the Center for Tourism and Recreation, Lyusine Kodyakova, warned about this in an interview with NEWS.ru.

According to the expert, airlines have long been selling more tickets than there are seats on the plane to compensate for losses due to no-show passengers. In her opinion, this should be officially allowed under the condition that passengers will be provided with full compensation for the cost of the ticket, fines for forced delay, as well as the search for an alternative flight and hotel room.

Kodyakova noted that in world practice, airlines can sell 10-15 percent more tickets than there are seats available. At the same time, for Russia, in her opinion, it is more important to take into account not the numbers, but the characteristics of specific flights. She emphasized that without mandatory compensation and transparent rules, the legalization of overbooking may not protect passengers, but become a step backward.
