Umbrella waving dispute at Taoyuan Station: Man was sent to disciplinary office for obstructing railway personnel from performing duties

A passenger dispute occurred on the Taiwan Railways' Ziqiang train No. 277 at around 6pm yesterday (6th). A man was persuaded for being too loud. He lost control and kept yelling. He even waved his umbrella and kept yelling at the conductor, "I have been riding for more than 10 years, why can't people stand in the carriage?" He finally got off the train at Taoyuan Station. The railway police were reported to the scene to deal with the matter. The police said that they had sent the man to the Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation for disciplinary action in accordance with the railway law.

The man was standing in the aisle of the sixth carriage of the train chatting with people. Other passengers thought that the man's voice had affected others and reported it to the conductor. The conductor came to the carriage to persuade others. The man lost control and questioned why others were talking as long as he kept a lower voice and waved his umbrella. The conductor and other passengers continued to comfort him. The man was still emotional and was asked to leave the carriage passage. He also questioned why the passage could not accommodate people. The conductor was worried that the umbrella would hurt other passengers and quickly grabbed it. The man finally got off at Taoyuan Station.

Railway police stated that they immediately dispatched personnel to deal with the report received in Taoyuan. When they arrived, there was no scene. It was understood that the train conductor had a verbal dispute during the persuasion process because other people reported that a passenger was suspected of speaking too loudly in the sixth car. The passenger had got off the train at Taoyuan Station. Subsequent police investigation found that A passenger uploaded an image to social media and found that the passenger's behavior involved obstructing railway employees from performing their duties. After investigation of the entire case, the case was transferred to the Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation for disciplinary action in accordance with Article 68-1, paragraph 5, of the Railway Act, which may impose a fine of not less than NT$10,000 but not more than NT$1 million.
