Jeollanam-do Gwangju Unified Special City Nam-gu Election Commission accuses local councilor of private misappropriation of political funds

(Jeonnam Gwangju = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Cheol-hong = The Nam-gu Election Commission of Gwangju, Jeollanam-do announced on the 4th that it had reported local council member A to the prosecution on charges of violating the political fund law.

Mr. A is accused of using a total of 6.3 million won in donations on 15 occasions for personal use, including withdrawing cash from his political fund account and using it for personal use or paying group membership fees between February and March of this year.

He is also suspected of using political funds for illegal purposes, such as providing food worth 970,000 won to eight people on nine occasions in the name of fundraising from February to April and disbursing the expenses as donations.

The Political Funds Act requires political funds to be spent only on expenses necessary for political activities and prohibits their use for personal expenses or improper purposes. Violation of this may result in imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 4 million won.
