Bayern Munich plays goalless against newly promoted Schalke 04

FC Bayern Munich surprisingly dropped points on the second Bundesliga matchday. The German champions couldn't get past a goalless draw at newly promoted Schalke 04. The Munich team should be particularly positive about the fact that playmaker Jamal Musiala celebrated a symptom-free comeback. After the German international suffered two absences in the pre-season and caused concern among the public, Musiala completed his 33 substitute minutes in the second half without incident.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany gave some of his stars a break before the Champions League opener against FK Bodø/Glimt on Thursday. Michael Olise and Harry Kane were only on the bench at the start of the game, Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl played from the start. That didn't stop Bayern's dominance, but it did limit the record champions' goal threat: Karl's long-range shot was no problem for Loris Karius (3rd minute), and even a deflected shot from Nathaniel Brown, who was once again deployed in the attacking midfield, couldn't get past the Schalke goalkeeper (13th).

Schalke remained awake and poisonous in the duels. Accents forward were rare, hopes of a penalty whistle after an alleged handball by Dayot Upamecano rightly went unheard (24th). Shortly before the break, Luis Díaz had Munich's first really top-class chance to finish, but the winger didn't hit the ball well at all (41'). So we went into the break with a draw, which Schalke's defense certainly deserved.

Kompany reacted, bringing on Kane for Brown (46'), and a little later Olise and Musiala for Karl and Saibari (57'). At this point, the game turned into a defensive battle - but one for which Miron Muslić had sufficiently equipped his team. At the same time, the Veltins Arena celebrated every duel won like a goal. Despite the great effort, Bayern barely got into the penalty area, and Karius directed a long-range shot from Kane over the crossbar (87').

After the final whistle, Bayern protested loudly because the stadium clock showed a different time than referee Robert Schröder's clock - but the referee's timekeeping was correct. The Munich team will end the match day in fourth place in the table at best. Freiburg is the front runner, ahead of BVB and Elversberg.
