Confession of match-fixing in the Bolivian League: Goalkeeper deliberately conceded a goal due to death threats

Guabira goalkeeper Manuel Ferrel and coach Leonardo Eguez confessed what happened in the match at the press conference held after the match. While Eguez could not hold back his tears in his statement, he stated that Ferrel deliberately conceded a goal in the match and that his wife and mother received death threats. In his statement about the incident, Eguez said, "Ferrel had to allow the opposing team to score three goals, otherwise he would have paid some money because he owed money to some people."

Bolivian Football Federation President Fernando Costa said in his statement: "We regret such incidents. We cooperated with both the player and the Guabira management, informed them of the situation and coordinated with the relevant authorities to initiate an investigation."

Regarding how this incident will affect the league, Costa said:

“I think this is exaggerated, but we need to determine what is going on with these irregularities and, of course, apply the most severe sanctions.”
