Meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives... “The French Revolution had an important impact on the era of Korean popular sovereignty”

President Lee Jae-myung, who is on a state visit to France, met with Brun Phoebe, Speaker of the French House of Representatives, on the 9th (local time) and discussed ways to cooperate between the two countries.

The meeting, which took place in the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives Phoebe, included Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun and National Security Office Director Wi Sung-rak from Korea, Bruno Fisch, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Sabrina Sebeich, President of the Friendship Association of Korean-French Parliamentarians, from France.

At this event, President Lee said, "In an environment where democracy is threatened around the world, reflecting the people's will in politics is the core of democracy," and added, "Congress plays a very important role in this process," said Kang Yu-jeong, chief spokesperson of the Blue House, in a written briefing.

President Lee also emphasized, “The French Revolution spread the values ​​of freedom, equality, and popular sovereignty, and had a significant impact on Korea opening the era of popular sovereignty.”

He added, "The basic democratic values ​​of freedom and equality have become a strong foundation for France and Korea to continue to develop as exemplary democratic countries, including economic development and expansion of high-tech industries."

He went on to say that there is great potential for further expansion of cooperation between Korea and France in various fields such as trade, investment, advanced technology, and social policy, and that for a new leap forward in the relationship between the two countries, the role of the National Assembly and groundbreaking and deep cooperation between the two countries' parliaments are necessary.

In addition, Speaker of the House of Representatives Phoebe expressed interest in Korea's policies for the development of democracy, and President Lee introduced Korea's institutional reform that can reflect the people's opinions in policies, Chief Spokesperson Kang introduced.

The two sides also discussed ways to expand cultural and human exchanges between Korea and France and reached a consensus on the need to further promote exchange and communication between the two countries' parliaments.

Meanwhile, considering that this year marks the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, President Lee wrote in the guestbook, "I hope that the governments and National Assembly of the two countries will work together to usher in a new 140 years between Korea and France."

After the meeting, President Lee was introduced to a colleague who was born in Korea, adopted in France, and worked with House Speaker Phoebe, and exchanged greetings.

In addition, President Lee received a macaron as a gift from House Speaker Phoebe and said, "You gave me such a precious gift," and after tasting it, he also recommended it to House Speaker Phoebe, saying, "It's so delicious. Thank you."
