Wuling High School statement: Students were bullied online and inappropriate attacks were detrimental to educational value

A graduate of Taoyuan City's Wuling High School called Mayor Zhang Shanzheng "Mayor of Xindian". Later, he was criticized by Taoyuan City Councilor Zhan Jiangcun of the Kuomintang, causing a storm. Wuling High School issued a school statement today pointing out that students have suffered personal attacks, abuse, harassment and psychological pressure from the online community. Any form of online bullying, witch hunting or inappropriate attacks on students is not conducive to the practice of educational values, and is what the school should defend.

The school stated that over the 71 years since Wuling High School was founded, countless teachers, students, parents and alumni have worked together to build reputation and social trust, which is an asset that all Wuling people cherish and protect. Mayor Zhang Shanzheng was invited to the graduation ceremony on June 1 to present awards to the winning students and give graduation blessings. The ceremony was in good order, with a warm and joyful atmosphere. Teachers, students and guests enthusiastically participated and successfully completed various activities, leaving precious and beautiful memories for the graduates.

The statement pointed out that the school respects the right of all sectors of society to express opinions on public affairs, and understands that there may be different views between different positions; however, any comments on the education scene should be based on complete facts and rational discussions; individual incidents or the words and deeds of a single student should not be infinitely expanded or over-interpreted as an evaluation of the entire student group, the teaching profession, or the school’s educational achievements.
