Gyeongju, simultaneously selected as a mega tourist zone linked to Daegu Airport and Gimhae Airport

Gyeongju is expected to take a leap forward as a global tourist city by promoting a super-wide tourism zone development project linking Daegu Airport and Gimhae Airport.

Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 14th that two tourist zones that applied for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's '5 major tourist zones (mega tourism zones) centered on local airports' development project were selected.

With both the Gimhae Airport tourist area (Busan - Gyeongju - Ulsan - Geoje, Tongyeong) and the Daegu Airport tourist area (Daegu - Andong - Gyeongju) included, Gyeongju became the only city in the country with multiple designations.

The government's development of a mega tourism zone centered on local airports is an ultra-wide tourism project aimed at expanding the rapid growth of Korean tourism to regional areas.

The key is to develop Korea's representative golden route by connecting gateway cities with local airports and linked cities with specialized tourism resources.

We provide intensive support with packages centered on the travel of visitors to Korea, such as integrated brand and overseas promotion, attraction of foreign tourists linked to the airport, convenience of transportation and payment (introduction of Korea Integrated Pass, etc.), development of specialized contents, K-Korean Wave tourism, K-food road, and port of call tour.

To this end, 93.5 billion won, including 65.9 billion won in national funds and 27.6 billion won in local funds, will be invested in 2027, and the plan is to expand considering future project performance.

Through this project, Gyeongju City is expected to establish itself as Korea's representative global tourism base by simultaneously accepting visitors to Korea from the southeastern sea at Gimhae Airport and visitors entering Korea inland from Daegu Airport.

Andong City is expected to leap forward as a world-class tourist city as this tourism support project adds to its increased global awareness and tourism demand following the Korea-Japan summit.

Although Pohang was excluded from this selection, the province plans to negotiate so that Yeongilman Port can receive support for linkage projects as a cruise port.

Park Chan-woo, director of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “The mega tourism right project will be an opportunity for Gyeongbuk to become the second tourist base for visiting Korea,” and added, “Based on specialized tourism resources, we will complete the representative tourism golden route most visited by people around the world and strive to spread tourists throughout the province.”
