Center-left divided on primaries, program and alliances in view of the elections

While it is called to a test of unity in the Chamber on the electoral law, the center-left continues to debate the issues of primaries, programs and alliances.

This week the Dem secretary Elly Schlein convened a secretariat in view of the direction set for Friday and preparatory to the assembly which should be held by the end of October. There are several open questions for the Dem leader starting from the discontent expressed on several occasions by the Reformist area which, among other things, made itself heard over the weekend and does not rule out fielding its own candidate in the primaries who could answer to the name of the MEP Giorgio Gori, among the most mentioned in these hours.

On a possible double name Dem, however, there is the coldness of the majority of the party. Furthermore, a hypothesis of this type would require a derogation from the statute. "The Democratic Party - recalls Igor Taruffi, organizational manager of the Democratic Party - has a statute that clearly indicates who the candidate at Palazzo Chigi is directly, i.e. the secretary of our party, and in the case of primaries the secretary of the party. From this point of view I don't see particular elements of discussion. It would seem strange to me to go and find further elements". On the other hand, it is highlighted by the Dem majority, if a candidacy is presented "the assembly is sovereign" and therefore it will be decided there. Even if another PD candidate "doesn't seem like a great idea to me", observes former minister Andrea Orlando.

More generally, the ways to identify the leader, Taruffi underlines, are "either the most voted party expresses the candidate or the primaries". An implicit nit to the hypothesis of a third name. No federators, therefore. Even if there is someone who would see a figure like Pierluigi Bersani in this role, in support of whom a collection of signatures has started on Change.org.

The third name, as is known, is not displeasing even in the Avs area. In short, the question still remains open. As well as those of the program and perimeter of the alliances. On the first point, M5s reiterates its availability. The program table "will not fail", underlines M5s vice president Stefano Patuanelli, highlighting that "on 99% of the issues we have a common vision". On the programme, underlines Taruffi, "the time has clearly come for us all to sit down together". And, according to the Dem representative, centrist representatives will also have to sit at the table. "There will be all the political forces and expressions and civic movements with which we presented ourselves together in seven regions - he underlines - there will be the Democratic Party, the M5S, Avs and obviously the centrist and reformist world". A galaxy in the process of being defined but with discreet ambitions. "If we run for office - assures the leader of Progetto Civico Alessandro Onorato - we will easily exceed 3%" and attacks Carlo Calenda on Ukraine: "I don't like politicians who act cool with weapons and he is one of them". The reply from the person concerned came shortly: "I would suggest Onorato to stay in his 'comfort area', and talk about concerts, flowerbeds and golf tournaments...".
