iMessage integration begins with ChatGPT's new Mac plugin

OpenAI has released a new Apple Messages plugin that will fundamentally change the experience for Mac users. With this new integration, ChatGPT has gained the ability to read, analyze, draft, and send direct replies to iMessage, SMS, and RCS messages on the macOS operating system.

This feature, which runs on Mac devices powered by Apple Silicon processors, is offered exclusively to ChatGPT Work and Codex users, and is not yet supported in standard ChatGPT chats. Users can activate the plugin through the ChatGPT plugin interface and start managing their messaging history with the help of AI.

For the new integration to become functional, users need to make certain technical adjustments on macOS. To allow ChatGPT to access messages, full disk access, contacts list permission, and approval for automation tools must be granted in system settings. This technology, which uses AppleScript and accessibility settings, enables the AI to communicate directly with the messaging app.

OpenAI specifically recommends that users avoid giving continuous permission and remain cautious with each operation to minimize security risks.

The application promises a significant productivity boost, especially in calendar management and reminders. For instance, users can ask the AI to check suitable time slots for dinner and prepare an automatic reply for the relevant person. Additionally, it offers practical solutions such as finding birthday dates in old messages and adding them to the calendar, or detecting and cleaning spam messages.

This collaboration between Apple and OpenAI takes place amid a period when the two tech giants are in court over allegations of stealing trade secrets. Although it is not yet clear whether Apple played a direct role in developing the plugin, the fact that the system operates through Apple's own scripting languages is noteworthy. While the legal dispute between the two technology giants continues, OpenAI's deep integration into the Apple ecosystem is raising interest in the industry.
