What will change at the famous observatory on Śnieżka?

The renovation of the observatory is expected to cost almost PLN 25 million and be completed in 2031. It will be carried out under the supervision of a conservator of monuments.

The head of the observatory, Piotr Krzaczkowski, informed that IMWM has already handed over the construction site to the contractor of this investment.

The first construction works will begin in the coming days. The rooms where the restaurant operates will undergo a general renovation - from the construction and replacement of installations to interior renovation, he explained.

All windows in the building will be replaced with metal ones, and it will also have a new roof covering. The changes will also apply to fire protection standards.

The renovation that is just starting will mainly cover the lower disk of the building. A restaurant is to reopen there.

For this to happen, it is necessary to build a sewage network to discharge sewage to the treatment plant in Karpacz. Work is being undertaken in this direction, noted the head of the observatory.

There will be no interruptions in the operation of the observatory during the renovation. We built a meteorological garden on the top of Śnieżka. For a year, we will compare measurements from instruments installed on the observatory building with those recorded in the meteorological garden at the top outside the building. Next year, when the renovation of the roof covering begins, we will be able to move completely to the top, outside - explained Piotr Krzaczkowski.

Construction work on Śnieżka is difficult due to the prevailing conditions. They can only be run for a dozen or so weeks a year.

The characteristic observatory building on Śnieżka, consisting of three connected disks, was built in 1974. Its construction took 5 years. This is one of two such facilities in Poland. The second one is located in the Tatra Mountains on Kasprowy Wierch.
