Cortina, 63-year-old hiker falls and dies on the Tofane: identified thanks to GPS

Concerned because they were no longer able to contact him, after the application that followed his itinerary always indicated the same position, the family members of a 63-year-old Italian man on an excursion to the Tofane mountains yesterday notified the Carabinieri of Cortina d'Ampezzo (Belluno).

At around 4.20pm the Suem 118 headquarters sent the Pieve di Cadore helicopter in the direction of Tofana di Dentro which identified the man's lifeless body in a canal, approximately 70 meters below the route that leads from the ridges of Cima Formenton towards the Baracca degli Alpini bivouac.

Once the death was confirmed, the body was transferred to the Codivilla hospital, where the Cortina Alpine Rescue and Guardia di Finanza teams were waiting.
