The history of the Nobel Prizes
The first edition of the Nobel Prizes was held in 1901 (while the one for Economic Sciences debuted in 1969). They were wanted by the Swedish entrepreneur and inventor Alfred Nobel, who in his will wrote that he wanted to use his fortune to reward those who, in the previous year, had contributed to bringing "the greatest benefits to humanity": in addition to a gold medal and a diploma, there is also a cash prize, which in 2025 amounted to around one million euros. The prizes are awarded by four institutions: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for Chemistry, Physics and Economics, The Swedish Academy for Literature, The Norwegian Nobel Committee for Peace and the Karolinska Institutet for Physiology or Medicine.
How assignment works
The path leading to the award is long and begins in September of the year preceding the Prize, when the Nobel Committees officially invite thousands of people in letters to propose, by the following 31 January, some personalities or organizations for the awards (this formal step is not mandatory for the Nobel Peace Prize). It is not possible to self-nominate. From February onwards, the Committees study the nominations and select some, submitting them, together with their recommendations, to the four institutions that will award the Awards. Winners are announced annually starting on the first Monday in October.
