Milan, tree falls in Piazza Risorgimento: three injured

A tree fell in Piazza Risorgimento in Milan just before 10am on Monday morning. The shrub, a specimen of elm (ulmus pumilla) hit three people, a woman and two men who were not in serious conditions. The alarm went off around 9.56 this morning, in the eastern area of ​​the city. The three passers-by involved were rescued on site, where 118, firefighters, state police and local police intervened. Conscious and not in danger of life, the three were transferred to Fatebenefratelli and the Polyclinic for further checks. During the morning, firefighters proceeded to remove the tree, cutting the branches to clear the area and allow it to be made safe.

The conditions of the wounded

None of the three injured people are in serious conditions: from the first checks carried out in the hospitals, none of them revealed any risky trauma. Only for one of them, a forty-one year old originally from Bangladesh, tests are continuing to exclude fractures or microfractures in the limbs. The man had been taken under code yellow to Fatebenefratelli, with polytrauma from crushing and suspected fractures to his upper and lower limbs. The other two injured people, a boy and a girl aged 21 and 20, both transported under yellow code, were hospitalized at the Polyclinic from where they could be discharged the same day. The 21-year-old suffered bruises to his legs and ankles, while the 20-year-old suffered bruises to her back, knee and ankles.

The reliefs

It was kept under observation by the Municipality, with the last check taking place on 4 September, but it was not considered to be demolished because it was at risk of falling. According to what was reported by the Milanese administration, the tree was under control by the agronomists of MM, the company that manages the care of the city's green areas on behalf of the Municipality, and had been classified in class C1, i.e. to be monitored annually, and not in class D, i.e. to be cut down because it is at risk of crashing. A few days ago, on September 4th, the last check-up focused on the state of health of the trunk and base. A traction test was scheduled for the middle of next week, necessary to investigate the health of the roots.
