In Novosibirsk, a patient had his femur and joints replaced with a megaprosthesis

Specialists from the Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after. Ya. L. Tsivyan of the Russian Ministry of Health installed a megaprosthesis for the patient, which completely replaced the femur and leg joints.

Surgery using a megaprosthesis is a new direction within the framework of the state guarantee program in Russia.

After rehabilitation treatment, the patient will be able to move independently.

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 4 – RIA Novosti. Specialists from the Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after. Ya. L. Tsivyan of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation was one of the first in Russia to install a megaprosthesis for a patient, which completely replaced the femur and leg joints, NNIITO told RIA Novosti.

The scientific institute explained that a 33-year-old man received multiple injuries in an accident two years ago, including his left arm and leg. Several surgeries failed to restore the leg. The femur was severely deformed, the hip joint was destroyed, and movement in the knee also became impossible. The man could not walk and experienced constant severe pain.

“In this situation, a non-standard solution is required that will return the person to the ability to walk, allowing him to avoid disability and restore his usual activity. We perform the operation using a megaprosthesis - a structure that completely replaces the patient’s femur and limb joints... Such a large-scale intervention is permissible only if the list of indications strictly matches,” commented Andrey Korytkin, director of the Novosibirsk Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics.

He explained that previously such technologies were used only in oncology for the radical removal of malignant tumors (for example, bone sarcomas), but here this is far from routine practice. In Russia, the use of megastructures in traumatology and orthopedics is a new direction within the framework of the state guarantee program. An expensive operation is free for the patient.

“Specialists removed the destroyed femur, prepared adjacent sections for the installation of hip and knee prostheses, gradually assembled and installed the components of the megaprosthesis, and replaced the hip and knee joints and femur with a single megaprosthesis complex. The operation lasted about four hours and went as usual - the patient was transferred to the department of anesthesiology and intensive care,” said the NNIITO.
