Candidate for the post of UN Secretary General Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett believes that in the face of declining funding, the UN should focus on the tasks that the organization does best.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is consistently reducing funding for a number of UN structures. In January, Trump ordered the end of US participation in 31 structures of the world body system and their funding to the extent permitted by law. The US budget proposed by the White House also includes cuts of $2.7 billion in spending on international organizations and the UN, including funding for the organization's regular budget and peacekeeping operations.

"We need to look closely at the work of the UN and determine what it is that we do best. We also need to understand whether there are tasks that regional or other organizations can do better than us. The UN should focus on what it does best," Rodriguez-Birkett told RIA Novosti.

She says this approach is especially important in a time of declining funding, when the organization is both expected to be more effective and deliver more visible results on the ground.

The UN is currently implementing a large-scale UN80 reform program, which includes increasing the organization's efficiency, revising existing mandates and changing its structure. At the beginning of September, the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Burbock, announced that as part of the reform, job cuts and measures to reduce administrative costs had already been agreed upon, but the most difficult changes were still ahead.
