School decree green light CDM, fines for covering face and compulsory Italian courses

The school decree has obtained the green light from the Council of Ministers, but work on financial coverage continues. The measure is not yet at the Quirinale: it could be examined by the head of state on Monday.

The changes: bans, Italian courses and textbooks

The provision provides for fines of 200 to 1,000 euros for those who show up at school with their faces covered. The ban concerns burqas and niqabs, but also surgical masks, which are only permitted in case of illness. If the violation is committed by a minor, the fine is applied to the parents.

The same penalty is foreseen for families who do not follow the free Italian courses. The obligation to attend is triggered when neither the student nor the family knows the language and this deficiency can compromise the child's integration and academic performance.

The measure also adds 8 million over two years to the Permanent Fund against cyberbullying and 21 million per year to make textbooks free, in whole or in part, for less well-off families. The ISEE threshold to access the benefit rises from 30 thousand to 40 thousand euros. 70 million goes to tutor teachers. The IEP adopted at the beginning of the study cycle must be updated only in the presence of new elements.
