Germany reaches solar record: More electricity from the sun than in the entire previous year

According to industry information, Germany has achieved a solar record: As of Sunday, 90.2 terawatt hours of solar power had already been generated this year, more than in the entire year of 2025, as the Federal Association of the Solar Industry (BSW-Solar) announced, citing data from the energy charts of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

In the entire previous year, 90.0 terawatt hours of solar power were generated. “The sun has already supplied more electricity this year than in the whole of last year - and that in September,” explained BSW Solar Managing Director Carsten Körnig. The association declared September 27th “Solar Day” because of the new record.

Criticism of the EEG amendment and network package

According to BSW-Solar, both “unusually many hours of sunshine and the continuous expansion of photovoltaics” contributed to the record. New systems would be built on residential and commercial buildings as well as on open spaces. At the same time, battery storage is becoming more important. “Solar energy is no longer a niche technology,” says Körnig.

Against this background, the association warned of new investment hurdles due to the planned EEG amendment for 2027 and the so-called network package. “Especially now we must not slow down the willingness of citizens and companies to invest,” said Körnig.

With the amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the network package, the federal government wants, among other things, to better manage expansion regionally. In addition, from 2027, small, mostly privately installed solar systems with an installed output of less than 25 kilowatts will no longer receive permanent funding.
