Chisinau may be left without water due to shallowing of the Dniester

CHISINAU, September 28 - RIA Novosti. Chisinau may be left without water in the coming weeks if the situation with low water levels in the Dniester River does not change, said Sergei Diaconu, director of the national crisis management center.

On Saturday, a state of emergency in hydrology came into force in Moldova for a period of 60 days, approved by parliament at an extraordinary meeting at the request of the government due to the shallowing of the Dniester River, which is the main waterway of the country. The Minister of Environment of the Republic, Georgiy Khazhder, said that the water level in the Dniester reservoir in Ukraine fell from 121.5 meters to critical - below 111 meters, creating risks for the operation of the hydroelectric power station.

“We are not saying that Chisinau will be left without water tomorrow, but this is a critical moment when, if we do nothing in the next two weeks, yes, Chisinau may be left without water,” Diaconu said on the Cinema 1 TV channel.

According to him, the situation needs to be changed urgently; if the water level in the lower reaches of the river reaches a critical level, then it will take a lot of time and effort to restore it.
