The defendant who shot and killed 22-year-old Mervenur Yararlık in a cafe in Diyarbakır was sentenced to 29 years in prison.

Mervenur Yararlık (22) lost his life and his friend S.K. as a result of the defendant Bülent Arpacı shooting him with a gun while sitting in a cafe at the entrance of a shopping mall in Selahattin Eyyubi District of Diyarbakır's Central Bağlar district, on March 8, 2025. He was injured.

According to the news in DHA, Bülent Arpacı, who was detained, said in his statement that the incident was caused by swearing between friends, that he shot at S.K., and that he shot Merve Nur unintentionally.

In his opinion, the public prosecutor expressed his opinion in favor of punishing the defendant and continuing his detention, citing the nature and nature of the crime, the current state of evidence and the suspicion of escape.

At the hearing, the defendant Bülent Arpacı stated in his defense that he repeated his previous statements and requested a decision for his release.

MERVENUR'S FAMILY WANTED HIM TO BE PUNISHED

The victim's mother Sevim and father Osman Yararlık also demanded that the defendant be punished. The lawyers of the victim's family and the lawyer of the Ministry of Family and Social Services also demanded that the defendant be punished for the crimes charged and that his detention be continued.

Mervenur Yararlık passed away at the age of 22.

29 YEARS IN PRISON FOR THREE CRIMES

The defendant's lawyers requested the release of their clients. The court sentenced the defendant to 18 years in prison for "possibly intentional murder" of Mervenur Yararlık, 9 years in prison for "attempting to deliberately kill" Yararlık's friend S.K., and 2 years in prison for "purchasing, carrying or possessing an unlicensed firearm and bullets", for a total of 29 years in prison.
