Zhu Zhongming was elected mayor of Shanghai

The current acting mayor of Shanghai, Zhu Zhongming, was elected mayor in the by-election.

According to news released today on the WeChat platform "Shanghai Release" of the Shanghai Municipal Government Information Office, the current acting mayor of Shanghai Zhu Zhongming completed the by-election process and was elected mayor of Shanghai at the 5th session of the 16th Shanghai People's Congress held in the afternoon.

Zhu Zhongming first succeeded Gong Zheng, the then mayor of Shanghai, who turned 66, in August as secretary of the Communist Party of China Municipal Government in Shanghai. The Standing Committee of the 16th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress held its 33rd meeting on September 4, accepting Gong Zheng's resignation as mayor of Shanghai and appointing Zhu Zhongming as deputy mayor and acting mayor.

At the Municipal People's Congress meeting held today, Zhu Zhongming was elected mayor in accordance with legal election procedures.

According to comprehensive mainland media reports, Zhu Zhongming is a native of Haining, Zhejiang. He was born in 1972 and is 54 years old. He graduated from the Department of Finance and Auditing, School of Economics, Wuhan University, majoring in auditing.

Zhu Zhongming has successively served as Party Secretary and Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Finance, Vice Governor of Hunan Province, and Deputy Minister of Finance. In July 2024, he was appointed deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and later concurrently served as secretary of the Political and Legal Committee. Until August this year, he was appointed secretary of the Communist Party of China Party Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Government.
