Belarusian Foreign Ministry: The UN does not meet the realities of the time, but BRICS and the SCO can become catalysts for its reform

Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov said that the UN does not meet the realities of the time.

He noted that new formats of international interaction, such as BRICS and the SCO, could become catalysts for reforming the UN.

According to Ryzhenkov, individual countries of the world should stop using the UN for their own selfish purposes and think about the fate of the planet as a whole.

The UN does not meet the realities of the time, however, in the new formats of international interaction that have emerged, such as BRICS and the SCO, Minsk sees not competitors of this organization, but catalysts for its reform, said Foreign Minister of Belarus Maxim Ryzhenkov.

“Does our organization keep up with the times? No, most likely, it does not meet the realities of today, does not keep up with changes and is not reforming much,” the minister said during a speech at the general political discussion of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

He noted that criticism of the UN is growing every year, expressing the opinion that this criticism is basically fair.

“The very fact of the emergence of new international global initiatives outside the system, for example, the Peace Council of President (US Donald - ed.) Trump or the International Organization for Cooperation in the Field of Artificial Intelligence - a Chinese project - is confirmation that the UN does not see new trends,” Ryzhenkov added.

He also drew attention to the fact that new formats of interaction are gaining strength - BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and other regional, economic and political associations.

“But we in Belarus see them not as competitors of the UN, but as catalysts for its inevitable reform,” Ryzhenkov noted.

According to him, the Belarusian side has a recipe for how to return the UN to its purpose.
