Protest in front of TURKSTAT from Edirne Pensioners Association

Representatives of political parties, non-governmental organizations and retirees supported the press release held by Edirne Pensioners Association in front of the Turkish Statistical Institute Edirne Regional Directorate.

The press release was read by Edirne Retirees Association President Ahmet Ziya Yaz. Yaz said that 85 percent of retirees live below the hunger line.

"NOT MISERY, BUT THE WAGES OF SLAVERY"

Yaz said:

"In Türkiye, retirees bear the heavy burden of the economic crisis, deepening income inequality and high inflation. While millions of retirees struggle to survive on poverty wages below the hunger line, they move away from humane living conditions every day and become depressed and insane. In this country, the facts are hidden in the numbers. While 85 percent of retirees are below the hunger line of 37 thousand 388 liras and have to live on an average of 25 thousand liras, the poverty line is 121 thousand liras." He can't even think of a salary of 286 lira.

11 million of the 17 million retirees who have difficulty making ends meet are either working or looking for a job. 5.1 million retirees have to live on 23 thousand 552 liras, this is no longer poverty, it has become the wage of slavery.”
