Former HSV captain Peter Nogly dies at the age of 79

Former HSV captain Peter Nogly is dead. The four-time national soccer player died on Thursday at the age of 79. Hamburger SV announced this, citing his family. The defender was one of the defining figures in the successful HSV era in the 1970s.

Nogly, who comes from Lübeck-Travemünde, came to Hamburg in 1969 and stayed until 1980. During this time he won the DFB Cup in 1976, the European Cup Winners' Cup a year later and became German champion in 1979.

The following season he reached the final of the European championship competition with HSV, but lost to Nottingham Forest. In total, he played 320 Bundesliga games for Hamburg and scored 38 goals. He was captain 122 times. Only Uwe Seeler wore the armband more often at HSV.

After his time at HSV, he moved to North America and played for two clubs there. After his return to Germany in 1983, he was active for Hertha BSC and FC St. Pauli in the 2nd Bundesliga. In 1989 it was finally over.

No red card

Nogly was considered the epitome of reliability, was tough on himself and others, but never unfair. He never saw a red card in his entire career. “I was rarely late, was usually already there and was always quite well in the opponent’s way,” he once said. “That’s why I didn’t get most of my yellow cards because of fouls, but because of complaining.”

He got his nickname “Eiche” from his teammate and then goalkeeper Gert Girschkowski. In 1970, Nogly was hit in the face by an elbow in a game in the Trade Fair Cities Cup - the predecessor competition to the later UEFA Cup - in Ghent and suffered a quadruple fracture of his cheekbone. Girschkowski's comment: "Now the oak has been felled."

One of the first players on the HSV “Walk of Fame”

The club honored Nogly for his achievements. He was one of the first players to be immortalized on the HSV Walk of Fame. The fans voted him into the “team of the century” at the club’s 125th anniversary in 2012. He remained connected to HSV even after his career. Among other things, he was a member of the Supervisory Board from 2014 to 2017.
