Medical students at USP in Bauru approve strike to restructure their internship

The decision to strike was taken after a vote among students from all years of graduation, in which 85.4% voted in favor of the strike of classes from the 1st to the 4th year.

According to the student movement, 5th year students decided to join the movement temporarily, while 6th year classes chose to maintain activities due to the proximity of graduation and the fear of possible institutional retaliation.

Among the category's main demands are the restructuring of the internship, a phase of college in which future doctors serve patients in the Unified Health System (SUS) network.

The group also demands an increase in internship fields, the creation of a direct communication channel with the administration and changes in the unit's management.

In a note, the Faculty of Medicine of Bauru at the University of São Paulo (FMBRU-USP) reported that dialogue with students is ongoing through channels and committees, that it works to expand activities in conjunction with the Hospital das Clínicas de Bauru and that, recently, the faculty received top marks in the Enamed test.

The management of FMBRU-USP also reported that 15 medical residency programs were recently implemented and that there was an increase in grades in stricto sensu postgraduate programs.

The management of Hospital das Clínicas de Bauru clarified, in a note, that patient care and the unit's activities were not affected by the student strike, as they have a team of professionals hired to provide assistance.
