US announces visa restrictions for South Africans accused of racism against Afrikaners

The United States Department of State announced this Tuesday (15) that it will restrict visas for South African citizens accused of practicing racism against Afrikaners, a community of white South Africans descended mainly from Dutch, German and French.

The issue had already been a source of tension between Donald Trump's government and South Africa. Last year, the North American president accused the African country of committing violence against Afrikaners. The US also welcomed members of the community to American soil.

Behind the dispute is a law passed by the South African Congress to correct the imbalance between properties in the country.

Data shows that white people own three-quarters of South Africa's freehold agricultural land.

On the other hand, black people dominate only 4% of these areas, even though they make up more than 80% of the population.

In 2025, Trump announced the cut of financial assistance to South Africa, claiming that the local government was "confiscating land" and that "certain classes of people".
