President Lai Qingde supports the results of Vice President Xiao Meiqin’s visit to Italy

Vice President Siu Meiqin visited Italy in a low-key manner to attend the second "Ventotene European Forum for Freedom and Democracy". She completed her mission and returned home early this morning. President Lai Ching-te later expressed his support, emphasizing that Taiwan is a member of the world. Going to the world and making friends with the world are the inalienable natural rights of the Taiwanese people. "We have the right and will continue to strive for opportunities for international exchanges and cooperation to let the world see Taiwan."

Lai Qingde said that he recently assigned Xiao Meiqin to lead a delegation to Italy to attend the forum upon invitation. This morning Xiao Meiqin returned to Taiwan safely. He wanted to say to Xiao Meiqin and all the partners who participated in the mission: "Everyone has worked hard and welcome back to China!"

Lai Ching-te mentioned that the Italian island of Ventotene, where political prisoners who resisted fascism were imprisoned, witnessed an important starting point in how Europe moved towards unity after the war and avoided the recurrence of war. On this island, Mikoto shared with the world Taiwan’s democratic journey and its determination to persist in freedom and protect peace in the face of authoritarian threats.

Lai Qingde emphasized that Taiwan is a member of the world, and it is the inalienable natural right of the Taiwanese people to go global and make friends with the world. We have the right and will continue to strive for opportunities for international exchanges and cooperation to let the world see Taiwan.

Lai Qingde said, "As Mikoto said, freedom is our common language and peace is our common desire." Taiwan will also fulfill its responsibilities as a member of the international community and work side by side with democratic partners to jointly maintain regional peace and stability and promote global economic prosperity.

Lai Qingde said that he would like to thank the Vice President of the European Parliament Pina Picierno for the invitation, as well as all international friends and partners with like-minded ideas who facilitated and assisted the trip, and also thanked the teams of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Palace led by Foreign Minister Lin Jialong.
