The Sudanese army rejects Ethiopian accusations of supporting the opposition and accuses Addis Ababa of supporting the Dagalo militia

(CNN) - The Sudanese Armed Forces announced their categorical rejection of the statements of the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Army in which he indicated Sudan’s support for Ethiopian opposition groups currently waging battles against Abiy Ahmed’s government.

The Sudanese army said in a statement on Monday night: “The Sudanese Armed Forces followed the statements of the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and the accusations they contained against Sudan of supporting the Ethiopian opposition.”

The statement continued: “The Armed Forces affirm their categorical rejection of these allegations, and consider them to be baseless accusations, at a time when information and facts are available about the continued support and support of the Al-Dagalo terrorist militia from Ethiopian territory, including training, supply, and the use of Ethiopian territory in military activities (strategic and suicide drones).”

The statement continued to emphasize that "Sudan is committed to international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and does not interfere in the internal affairs of countries, but at the same time it will not allow its sovereignty or national security to be compromised."

The Sudanese army called on Ethiopia "to exercise accuracy and responsibility, and to resort to dialogue and official channels, in a way that preserves the security and stability of the two countries and the region."

The renewed violence in Ethiopia in recent days comes after about two months of limited clashes. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a non-governmental organization, said that fighting between Tigray forces and federal forces began near the Ethiopian border with Sudan on August 1.

Both sides also accused each other of starting those clashes.

According to the organization, this was followed by drone strikes by federal forces, and movements by Tigray forces, which pushed tanks and artillery south this month.

On Wednesday, Tigray forces seized 3 airports that were under the control of the federal government, coinciding with the outbreak of fighting in the neighboring Amhara and Afar regions.
