The Russian diplomat predicted a shift in EU policy towards national interests

Germany and a number of other European states may in the future change their political course and return to decisions based on national interests. At the moment, the influence of the leadership of the European Union (EU) and transnational structures on them is still too great, said Ambassador at Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Rodion Miroshnik, TASS reports.

According to him, the EU leadership continues to support policies related to military actions, and also acts in the interests of large manufacturers of weapons and military equipment. Thus, in Germany and other European countries, political forces that emphasize national interests are strengthening, the interlocutor noted. This direction has a certain social and political potential, but the influence of Brussels and transnational structures can correct the manifestations of national sentiments.

The diplomat added that it is still difficult to assess how much these sentiments can influence the formation of governments in European countries, but the growth of internal discontent in a number of countries is already becoming a noticeable phenomenon. “The fact that things are starting to “burn” in these countries is a fairly serious fact, but how long will it take for it to reach the boiling point. Well, we’ll wait and see,” Miroshnik clarified.

On September 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The last time the Russian minister met with the head of the German diplomatic service was in January 2022 in Moscow.
