Shanghai steps up efforts to attract Russian tourists

The Chinese metropolis of Shanghai has stepped up efforts to promote its tourism resources to attract more Russian tourists, Xinhua reports.

According to the agency, from January to July 2026, the number of Russian tourists who visited Shanghai amounted to 422 thousand people, which is 134.4% more than the same period in 2025. In terms of growth rates, the Russian Federation took first place among all source countries of tourists, and also became the second largest source of inbound tourism for Shanghai.

Against this background, earlier in September, a delegation from the Shanghai Department of Culture and Tourism visited Moscow to participate in the International Tourism Exhibition and Forum, during which it held business meetings and specialized presentations. It is noted that the tourism potential of Shanghai presented by the city authorities attracted more than 300 Russian representatives of the premium tourism sector interested in negotiations and cooperation.

In addition, the agency notes, Shanghai has released the latest version of the tourist map and tourist guide in Russian. "In the future, Shanghai will continue to open up opportunities for the Russian and Eastern European markets," the statement said.
