The FAA proposes to limit flights around Mar-a-Lago due to security threats

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed restricting flights within a radius of nearly 2 km around President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

The no-fly zone proposed by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on September 1 has a radius of more than 1.8 km and an altitude of about 610 m around the Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida. This resort is located near Trump International Airport (the new name for Palm Beach International Airport).

The US Secret Service requested the restrictions based on intelligence about security threats, according to the FAA. They assert that the measure will "significantly enhance the ability to reduce the ongoing risks from unlicensed aircraft and drones".

The FAA typically imposes expanded flight restrictions whenever the President or Vice President travels outside of Washington, and will continue to impose broader restrictions when Mr. Trump is at Mar-a-Lago.

The FAA will still allow commercial aircraft to operate as long as the rules are followed. Without this exception, the main runway at the airport in Palm Beach would essentially be grounded and unusable.

The US Aviation Administration will also allow aircraft to perform emergency, life-saving and law enforcement missions in restricted areas. For these flights, pilots must maintain two-way radio contact with air traffic control and obtain clearance before entering the area.

Palm Beach International Airport was renamed Trump International Airport in July, the latest move in a series of buildings and government programs named after him.

The FAA previously banned aircraft from operating in the area around the seven residences of the US president and vice president. The most recent time was in 2001 in Crawford, Texas, where former President George W. Bush owned a ranch. These restrictions remain in effect, although the scope of the restricted area was narrowed in 2010.
