Isabel Díaz Ayuso looked out at the entrance to the event and saw Alberto Núñez Feijóo arrive in a jacket, jeans and sneakers. They shook hands, exchanged a few words and posed for a photo together. It was a peaceful morning in Getafe with a light breeze, everything was kisses and hugs. It looked like a wedding banquet. This Saturday, the leader of the national PP showed his support for the president of Madrid at the event that marks, every September, the beginning of the political course for the party in the capital of Spain. “We are getting closer,” Feijóo assured in reference to the next general elections. At a difficult time for Ayuso due to the penthouse crisis, her boss has not left her stranded. The atmosphere was relaxed, pleasant, conducive to jokes, to the point that the Madrid president joked that Pedro Sánchez is obsessed with her because of things of love. “If I were Begoña, I would be angry…” she said to the laughter of the staff, who were fanning themselves in the front row.
The PP sees the President of the Government as weak and already envisions his arrival at Moncloa next year. A certain feeling of euphoria ran through the Hotel Exe Getafe, where the meeting was held and the party's deputies in the Madrid Assembly will be staying tonight, the same ones who were asked for greater involvement on social networks when the controversy arose over the luxury home that the Community of Madrid bought for the president to use. The leadership saw them as too timid when it came to defending the fort. In the local PP they want to team up in the face of “external attacks”, the interference that wants to disunite them and put them in the pillory, always according to their vision, an Ayuso that until a few weeks ago seemed impregnable.
Feijóo did not refer to the attic at any time. The fact of not mentioning it already means burying an issue that haunts Ayuso and marks the return to the activity of the Assembly next week and the talk of the circles of power in Madrid. The PP leader preferred to talk about the Ayuso who worked in August to rebuild the mountain towns affected by the fires. “I have seen their suffering,” he said. He recalled that Ayuso will face a current socialist minister, Óscar López, in the regional elections, and the mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida, also present, will face the former minister Reyes Maroto. "You beat the ministers and I beat the president. We are going to beat them all," he ventured.
The opposition leader was the most restrained of those who participated in the rally, but he still threw himself at Moncloa's neck: "This is Sánchez's Government, hostile to the invaded and docile to the invaders." Ayuso's tone was less institutional and more warrior-like. He reminded Sánchez that the King is taller than him and predicted a future for him “in one of the banana dictatorships that he likes so much.” She was so excited that she had to correct herself in the middle of a sentence: "In your fucking life you have seen yourself in an official car, living beyond your means (...). Let go now, nouveau riche, it doesn't belong to you." He accused the president of insulting the people of Ceuta by calling them racists and said that his government is “delusional.” Of course, he did not forget to point out that there in front of him, the man who was listening to him on the front line, Feijóo, with that focused gaze of a former myopic, was “the future president of Spain.”
It was not a leaden event at all, on the contrary, lightheartedness reigned. "You can win now, you better. I have already threatened him," he hesitated to the PP candidate in Getafe, the first to have spoken. Antonio José Mesa came out very excited and described his city as the cradle of Spanish aviation and the exact geographic center of Spain. His intervention had a comical point. He boasted that the Princess of Asturias studies at Carlos III and spoke about himself in the third person, calling himself Jota.
He did not hold back when talking about his political adversaries. He asked Feijóo to dismantle Sanchismo “piece by piece.” “Those who are fucking traitors, let them go,” he shouted enthusiastically, which amused and perhaps even made the PP bosses a little uncomfortable, who were listening on the front line. He said that the current mayor of Getafe, the socialist Sara Hernández, is “unworthy” and “shameful” for not having attended the march through Ceuta. He was sweating when he came off the stage. After the event, Ayuso and Feijóo each went their separate ways, but making it clear that, right now, they are united and together in adversity. The PP believes that this is not the time for fissures.
