FIDE General Assembly Upholds Suspension of Chess Federation of Russia

SAMARKAND, September 27. /TASS/. The General Assembly of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has upheld the suspension of the Chess Federation of Russia, a TASS correspondent reported.

Delegates rejected proposals from the chess federations of Armenia, Belarus, Cuba, and Nicaragua to reinstate Russia’s membership by a majority vote.

Speaking at the event, the organization’s President Timur Turlov recalled that the FIDE must abide by the rulings of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). He also expressed hope that the FIDE can find a way out of this situation and that one day the Chess Federation of Russia will be reinstated with full rights once the CAS conditions are met.

Earlier, TASS reported that the FIDE Council had temporarily suspended the membership of the Chess Federation of Russia in the organization for failing to comply with a CAS decision.
