French Prime Minister Lecornu calls for savings to ministries

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that his country no longer has the opportunity to finance everything and called for savings in ministries for the 2027 budget.

Negotiations on the 2027 budget draft in France are expected to start in the Parliament next month.

According to news in the national press, Lecornu sent a letter to the ministries yesterday regarding next year's budget.

In the letter, within the scope of the 2027 budget, state expenditures other than defense were requested to be kept at the same level as this year's budget and called on the ministries to make savings.

Pointing out that the economic and international context has deteriorated in recent months, the letter said about public expenditures: "We no longer have the opportunity to finance everything, but we still have the freedom to choose." evaluation was included.

While budget disputes caused political instability in France, Michel Barnier's government was overthrown by a motion of no confidence at the end of 2024 due to disagreements in the 2025 budget negotiations.

Barnier's predecessor, François Bayrou, was also unable to pass the vote of confidence in the National Assembly on September 8, 2025, due to discussions on the 2026 budget bill.

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Lecornu, who was serving as Defense Minister, as prime minister the next day.

Lecornu, who formed the new government in France on October 5, 2025, resigned a day later due to the reactions to the people in his government. Macron reappointed Lecornu as prime minister on October 10, 2025, and Lecornu formed the new government 2 days later.
