France and Germany reached an agreement. Emission requirements are being eased in automotive

An official from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham's Prime Minister's Office told Reuters that the inclusion of the automotive sector in the scope of "Made in Europe" would be good news for the British industry.

The British official noted, however, that the details of the draft have not yet been seen and that the approval of the whole of Europe will be needed for it to come into force.

On the other hand, the draft text prepared by Paris and Berlin puts London's use of this privilege on strict conditions. The inclusion of the UK in the plan is attributed to the principle of full reciprocity and dynamic adaptation to the conditions imposed by the EU on investments from third countries.

This suggests that the UK may have to adopt exactly the trade protection measures put in place by the EU to restrict imports of Chinese-made hybrid and electric vehicles.

It is stated that the new emission target may also create controversy in German domestic politics.

The Environment Minister from the Social Democratic Party had advocated reducing the emission target to 95 percent and compensating the remaining 5 percent deficit with the use of low-carbon steel.

Even if the leadership of the two countries reaches full agreement among themselves, it is not guaranteed that the regulation will come into force.

In order for the plan to become binding, other EU member states and the European Parliament must be convinced.
