Stolen coin treasure worth over 300,000 euros discovered on a motorway in the Czech Republic

Curious find on a motorway in the Czech Republic: During mowing work, workers discovered a suitcase in the ditch - it contained more than 400 coins. They alerted the police, who immediately investigated the collector's items, which were found almost 30 kilometers from the German border. The result: “These coins come from a crime, more precisely a theft,” a police spokesman told CNN Prima News.

Value of more than 300,000 euros

The victim of the crime was a French collector who took part in a trade fair in Prague at the beginning of September. Two unknown perpetrators broke into the trunk of his car and stole the collector's case. They then fled in a vehicle with a Polish license plate. The value of the coins was estimated at the equivalent of more than 300,000 euros.

It was initially unclear why the suspected thieves later got rid of their loot near the northern Bohemian town of Lovosice. They may have been afraid of being stopped by the police. The D8 (E55) motorway runs from Prague to the German border near Breitenau (Saxony). Experts also pointed out that stolen historical coins are virtually unsalable on the legal market. Reputable dealers would compare offers with loss reports in search databases.
