Center-right governors applaud the abolition of car tax, center-left criticizes: 'electoral demagogy'

Center-right governors enthusiastically welcome the abolition of tax for small and medium-sized cars and motorcycles. Those on the centre-left have a completely different opinion, with the president of Tuscany Eugenio Giani speaking of a "reckless level of electoral demagogy".

According to the governor, the decision will have an impact above all on the coffers of the Regions. And the announced refunds will be of little use. The arrival of the measure approved by the Council of Ministers is welcomed with appreciation by the president of the Conference of Regions Massimiliano Fedriga. "This is a provision that we evaluate positively even more for the financial coverage supported by the government, without burdens on the regional budgets", comments the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Giani's response was clear: "Electoral demagogy had never reached this reckless and bad government level in 80 years of the Republic."

As regards the 'refunds' announced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni "it is falsely stated that they are compensations. It is enough to read the decree to realize that, taking the example of Tuscany, a refund of just over 100 million euros is envisaged, depriving us of revenue of around 350". For the Tuscan governor "we want to give the idea of ​​reducing state taxes by approving by law the elimination of revenue deriving from taxes from the regions" but "in fact" services to citizens are put in crisis". The president of Emilia Romagna Michele De Pascale (Pd) is skeptical: "We are waiting to have official documents to understand. From what we know we are talking about a cut of 2.3 billion out of over seven billion in total tax revenue, 550 for the Emilia-Romagna region alone."

While the governor of Puglia, Antonio Decaro (Pd) says he is "certain that it is a coincidence that the measure is valid for 2027, the year in which we vote. But even chance sometimes has an excellent sense of timing". Instead, they thank the twelve centre-right governors: "We express appreciation for the measure which exempts an important portion of citizens from paying car and motorbike tax, relieving them from an administrative, bureaucratic and fiscal burden", declare the presidents of the Abruzzo Region Marco Marsilio, Basilicata Vito Bardi, Calabria Roberto Occhiuto, Lazio Francesco Rocca, Liguria Marco Bucci, Lombardy Attilio Fontana, Marche Francesco Acquaroli, Molise Francesco Roberti, Piedmont Alberto Cirio, Sicily Renato Schifani, Veneto Alberto Stefani and of the Autonomous Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti At the same time, "this provision also relieves the Regions, who will be compensated by the State for an equivalent amount, without having to face the uncertainty linked to the collection and recovery of tax evasion. It is a measure that simplifies the relationship between citizens and institutions and stabilizes the revenues of the Regions in the relationship with the State".
