Hamburg is strengthening police drone defense with a 4.2 million euro investment

The Hamburg Senate is strengthening the police's drone defense system. Three detection and defense systems are to be purchased for 4.2 million euros, as the interior authority announced.

The devices from Argus Interception are scheduled to go into service this year. The system, which is also used by the Bundeswehr, can combat a drone like the one used in the attempted attack at Leipzig Airport at the beginning of August, a spokeswoman for the authority explained. The system scans the airspace with various sensors.

Protection against hybrid attacks

The “Hamburger Abendblatt” had previously reported on the new defense project. Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) told the newspaper: "The current situation now requires further consistent steps. With the purchase of three modern drone defense systems, we are now significantly expanding our protection against hybrid attacks very quickly."

Police President Falk Schnabel explained: “With the new mobile systems, the Hamburg police can react flexibly and appropriately to threats, especially in the area of ​​critical infrastructure and at major events.”

Schleswig-Holstein is also expanding its defense

Schleswig-Holstein is also reacting to the threat posed by drones over critical infrastructure. Interior Minister Magdalena Finke declared at the beginning of September: “The Schleswig-Holstein State Police have created over 50 new positions for the drone defense unit and for the associated investigative work.” In addition, an investment of seven million euros in modern drone defense technology has created a basis for multi-stage defense - from early detection and verification of a drone to targeted intervention.
