Prime Minister Takaichi expresses support for ICC at Japan-US summit meeting

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on the 25th that during a recent summit meeting with US President Trump, he stated that ``Japan consistently supports and will support the International Criminal Court (ICC).'' Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Mogi and US Secretary of State Rubio reportedly agreed to communicate regarding the ICC issue. He responded to an interview with reporters at the Prime Minister's official residence.

The Japan-U.S. summit meeting was held on the 22nd in New York, USA. The prime minister told reporters, ``I recognize that the United States has a very strong sense of distrust toward the ICC, and its stance is extremely harsh.'' He expressed his intention to continue appealing to related countries to ensure the continuation of the ICC.

The US administration aims to dismantle the ICC, and has designated Director Tomoko Akane and others as targets for sanctions. Trump has increased pressure on member states, calling on them to withdraw from the United Nations in his general debate speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
