Chilean President Kast meets Venezuelan interim President Rodríguez in New York

The president of Chile, José Antonio Kast, met in New York with the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, to discuss the situation of Venezuelans present in Chile and the reactivation of diplomatic and consular relations between the two countries. The meeting took place after the restoration of consular relations, announced in August.

“We support the reconstruction of Venezuela,” Kast said, adding that steps will be taken in the coming months to fully restore the functioning of Venezuelan institutions. According to the Chilean president, Rodríguez has indicated his willingness to proceed towards new elections after the reconstruction of the country and the overcoming of some emergencies.

Documentation and regularization problems affecting thousands of Venezuelan citizens in Chile were also at the center of the conversation. Kast also stated that other South American countries are moving towards restoring diplomatic relations with Caracas.
