India vs Afghanistan: T20I Series Opener Preview and Squad Updates

If the weather allows a full game, attention will turn to India's returning stars.

Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson and Axar Patel are back in the squad after missing India's 3-0 T20I series against Zimbabwe.

Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar have also been cleared fit to play.

The BCCI confirmed that Harshit Rana has been ruled out because of a "rectus femoris strain", with Yash Thakur named as his replacement.

According to AccuWeather, there is a 64 per cent chance of precipitation in Delhi on Sunday, with rain threatening to disrupt the opening match.

The game is scheduled to start at 7 PM. Hourly forecasts suggest that the weather threat will be greater during the afternoon and evening than in the morning.

The chance of rain is 10 per cent or lower until noon. However, from 1 PM onwards, the precipitation chances rise to around 50 per cent.

At 6 PM, the chance of precipitation is 40 per cent, while it drops to 37 per cent at 7 PM, when the match is scheduled to begin.

Iyer also spoke about his excitement at being part of the Asian Games for the first time.

He will lead India's gold medal defence and is also looking forward to interacting with athletes from other sports.

"It is definitely an exciting time for me and also for the team because it is going to be my first time, and there are a couple of players who have already been in the last Asian Games.

So, yes, we are going as a whole nation and then definitely we want to see to it that we come back triumphant," he concluded.

In Samson's case, dropping him in England after only three failures in a high-risk format appeared harsh.

But the Sooryavanshi excitement had reached such a level that the team management eventually had to listen to the popular demand, despite its stated approach of staying away from outside noise.

There is also a possibility that both Samson and Sooryavanshi could feature against Afghanistan.

That could happen if Ishan Kishan, who had a back injury scare during Friday's net session, is ruled out.

Kishan comes into the series after an excellent Duleep Trophy final, where he scored 270 and 80. He would not want to miss out on the only format in which he is a regular for India.
