Accidents at work: reports at the highest level for 26 years, deaths decreasing in 2025

In the report for 2025 illustrated to the Chamber by the president of INAIL, Fabrizio D'Ascenzo, there were 600 thousand accident reports, an increase of 1.2% compared to 2024. Of these, 519 thousand reports concern workers (+0.8% on 2024); 80% occurred during work (+0.5%) and the remaining 20% ​​on the way to and from the workplace (+2.4%). While 81 thousand complaints concern students (+3.4%), to whom the insurance policy has also been extended for journeys linked to school-work alternation.

There were 1,198 reports of fatal accidents, a decrease of 3.3% compared to 2024. In particular, reports for workers dropped by 1,189 (37 less than 2024): of these, 75% occurred at work and the remaining 25% while commuting between home and work. There were 9 reports of fatal accidents among students (four less than in 2024).

Comparing the reports of accidents occurring while carrying out work activities to the number of Istat employed people, the 2025 value stands at 1,720.4 cases per 100 thousand employed, 0.3% lower than the previous year (1,725.6) and 13.4% compared to that recorded in 2019 (1,986.7). The value of fatal cases is also decreasing, which stands at 3.69 deaths per 100 thousand employed, with a reduction of 4.9% compared to 2024 (3.88) and 5.4% compared to 2019 (3.90).

The riskiest sectors are always the same. More than 70% of the total workplace complaints are concentrated in the manufacturing, construction, healthcare, transport and trade sectors. For deaths, construction, manufacturing and transport account for almost 60% of fatal workplace complaints.
